I took these.
I needed to use up a new roll.
And though I keep taking the same photograph
of myself in the circle mirror.
I keep wanting to.
So I did.
Just before I left.

That afternoon, I lost the hat I loved-
the one from far away.
But now I have a photograph of it
for the book of lost and broken things
that I have decided to someday make.

And for that whole weekend it was like I was home,
only on a different side of the country.
I felt the happiest and saddest
that I have felt in a while.

with these people that were so like my friends back east,
or to be increidbly homesick
by how much they reminded me of
the real thing.
I do know that,
that weekend,
I was a very quiet observer.

And when the show was over
we went for a walk in a cemetery
that was next to the bar.
She pulled out the one pack of cigarettes that she buys once a year,
and we walked through the graves
and each smoked one.

And that walk,
I think,
will be engraved in my memory for a long time.

I remember the full moon,
the talking and the silence,
and the feeling
that each of us were doing something rare.

The thought that the only other people
walking through cemetaries and smoking cigarettes just then
were either thirteen year old girls or homeless men,
but somehow doing so fit the two of us
perfectly
just then.
